Grand Lake St. Marys takes another big step toward preventing toxic algae.

Officials dedicated a new lake dredger, nicknamed Brutus.

The machine weights 57 tons and will remove contaminated dirt from the bottom of the lake.

It replaces an old dredger that's more than 40 years old.

"Our major problem is phosphorus stuff. We can remove it that's less we have in our lake. The life span of this machine if we look at past machines, another got 50 years so we hope to get 40 to 50 years out of this equipment," said Tom Graybow, Dredge Supervisor.

Dredges are also stationed at Indian Lake and Lake Loramie.
