Treasurer Milt Miller presented his report via telephone, stating the account stands at $2326.57.
Brian Miller gave the following lake report:
Lake level Approx. 10” above normal pool.
Dredge
- The Dredge crew put out the Airy Gators and the floating curtain. The curtain had to be deployed several times and then failed due to wind and wave action. It cost us about a week of work.
- Support work for the dredge program. Moving and fusing dredge line, DMRA prep work and renovation work, planting grass seed on the DMRA, brush hogging DMRA’s, machine repairs, delivery and assembly of the new barge and trouble shooting of problems with the spud legs. Spring log removal from lake and feeders.
- The big dredge is at Beaver Creek pumping and will continue working on that project.
- The smaller dredge is at Schell’s Channel and will be pumping next week and will finish that project before moving.
- The next job will be Riley Bay East and that will be a big job that will pump over 80,000 cubic yards this year.
- Even though we are getting a late start to the pumping season I still foresee it as being a good year where we should pump well over 100,000 cubic yards.
Lake Issues
- The lake water is still looking very good. The latest algae toxin, microcystin level is .5 which is excellent. E. coli is low also but no number.
- The West Bank boat house is finished except for some outside grading and grass planting. It will be dedicated on June 19 at 1pm and ODNR Director Sean Logan will be the keynote speaker.
- Watch out for dredge line and buoys now that we are into the dredging season.
Park Issues
- Memorial Day weekend was very busy and very good. Even the beaches were busy and the campground was packed.
- We have been given DOT funds to repave parts of the campground. That work will be finished up in the next week.
- Speed on West Bank Road, warning of increased enforcement.
Canal
- Lockkeeper’s house, dedication on June 19.
Laura Walker reported that a 1.5 million dollar grant has been received to fund ag practices that positively impact the watershed. She spoke about the many education programs she has been presenting to school children and also told about a floating wetlands project that is being investigated for a trial on the lake.
Mike Sudman reported that students from Bowling Green State University are conducting experiments on the algae growth in Grand lake St. Marys.
Kelly Kill reported that the canal in downtown St. Marys is being dredged as the city prepares for the installation of the wooden doors on Lock 13. She said she is anticipating the project will be completed and water returned to the canal by Summerfest.
Ryan Garrison reported that the South Shore Sportsman’s Kids Fishing Derby was a success despite some inclement weather. More than 200 kids participated. He also said the annual goose round up is scheduled for June 16th and added that the fishing ahs been good on the lake, especially catfish and bluegill.
Donna Grube noted the park & lake have been very busy with lots of people stopping in for information. She said the positive stories that have appears in the media certainly helped the holiday weekend attendance.
Frank Murray spoke about the recent Heritage Trails Park District Trails Dedication ceremony.
Dave Meyer reported on the passing of former LDC Trustee Bob Grimm. The board sends condolences to his family. Bob was a good man who worked hard to improve the lake with his involvement with the LIA & LDC. He will be missed.
