Fishing Derby For Special Needs Children

Come out for fun, laughter, food, fish, and a great cause as the annual fishing derby for the Special Needs Children of Mercer and Auglaize counties will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at the East Bank Shelter # 1 on Grand Lake St.Marys.  Sponsored by the Lake Improvement Association and the Ohio Division of Parks, the fishing derby kicks off with hot dogs, potato chips, soft drinks and cookies before the kids take to the banks to cast for the day's catch.  There are always plenty of fish caught and many pictures taken of the kids having a blast.   The fishing derby is free, and all fishing equipment is supplied by the Lake Improvement Association and the Division of Parks.

Over the last 6 years the fishing derby has averaged 360 attendees including children, teachers, teacher aides, and parents.  And we can use some extra loving hands to help with preparing the shelter area and serving lunch, preparing the fishing area, baiting hooks and removing caught fish.  We've also gone through over 1,000 cookies at each fishing derby and so we're seeking volunteer bakers.  We're also seeking volunteers to help clean up - this is a major project to put on for the kids so any assistance you can provide will be appreciated!
