Lake Development Corporation Minutes
1/08/07
January 8, 2007 ~ Wright State University Lake Campus, Rm #182
Attendance: Jim Dabbelt, Frank Murray, Greg Schumm, Terry Wissman, Milt Miller, Julie Miller, Doug Temple, Owen Hall, Bob Grimm (LIA), Kelly Kill, Craig Morton Guest: Nancy Allen, Daily Standard.
The meeting was called to order by President, Jim Dabbelt. The November minutes were approved by Doug and seconded by Frank. Milt Miller gave a treasurer's report indicating a balance of: $9,209.84. He shared his concern for the low solicitation response. LY we raised about $5,000, and this year we have received only half as many contributions. It was decided that a second notice would be mailed to the contacts who have not responded, followed by phone calls next month. Milt will get with Donna to coordinate this effort.
President Dabbelt expressed concern over the number of fishing tourney that will not be held at Grand Lake this year. LY we hosted 102 tourneys. Both FLW and BASS have backed away. Water quality issues and poor fishing conditions are main contributors. This means an economic loss to the region and needs to be addressed. Craig mentioned that the fishing tourney registration process now includes a mandatory cell phone number for each tourney director for approval. This is being done to communicate any wake violations during the weekend tournaments.
Craig Morton reported that the lake level is 15" above normal. It has been difficult to measure due to the recent high winds. The long reach dredge is operating at Liette's. The DMRA site in St. Marys held three deer hostage, but were freed without incident. Loramie crane crew has moved to Riley Bay channel. Last sediment trap completed, looking toward Coldwater Creek for next one. Long range plan calls for the mouth to be dredged. The state park's maintenance room has been spruced up including insulation, improved lighting and the addition of a waste oil heater. This will make a better environment for equipment repair. Craig asked members to suggest waste oil sources for the new heater. Frank suggested contacting the recycling center near Mt. St. Marys.
Craig will be meeting with members of Columbus to refine 10 year plan for machine maintenance, dredging, shoreline protection and capital equipment. Jim's LDC committee has recently discussed some ideas on what is badly needed and priorities. He will be sharing with Craig. HB #699 passed, but did not include any shoreline protection dollars for Grand Lake. Window replacements have been done at Grand Lake park restrooms and shower rooms. The campground is getting a water line replacement done by May.
LIA volunteers will be setting a schedule to check quality of sediment traps already constructed. Craig shared ice safety guidelines with the group. (Also available on the watercraft division's website) Questions and answers from this summer's Lake Summit have now been posted on Keith Faber's website, and the Mercer County website.
Frank Murray has set March 1 as the tentative Wildlife Summit date. He will check with his Columbus contacts and begin planning the campus event with Greg Schumm.
Owen reported that the new chief is Sean Logan. Many other personnel changes will be taking place, and we need to make an effort to obtain the list of new key people at the state. Legislative Day on the Lake is tentatively set for June 14. Owen will make sure there are no conflicts with this date and report back to the group to finalize. He also shared that the parks and recreation group has been considering a change to their lobbying efforts.
Greg mentioned that the campus is hosting an ice rescue workshop later this month. Bob invited interested members to the next LRC meeting, Jan. 15 at the Moose where guest speaker, Professor Bob Hiskey, will give a biology status report on the lake water quality.
With no further business, Frank motioned for adjournment, seconded by Terry.
