Lake Development Corporation Minutes
3/05/07
With neither the President nor Vice President in attendance, the March LDC meeting was called to order at 4:06 by Treasurer Milt Miller. Present were Rick Bachelor, Todd Fleagle, Bob Grimm, Donna Grube, Kent Hinton, Tom Knapke, Milt Miller, Doug Temple, Terry Wissman, Julie Miller and Nancy Allen of the Daily Standard.
Doug Temple moved the February minutes be approved as e-mailed, seconded by Julie Miller, motion carried.
Miller reported that the LDC had a current balance of $9809.84. He noted that several more donations had been received and that several expenses had been paid leaving a balance of $10,056.84. It was noted that there would most likely be a bill from the University for the lunch at the Wildlife Summit, although neither Frank nor Greg were in attendance to give an estimate on that cost.
Julie Miller reported that she had attended the Wildlife Summit and that there were some good presentations. She noted that an article in the Sunday Dayton Daily News touched on the day as well as the need to clean up the lake. A discussion followed from a concern expressed that if corn prices remain high, farmers may take land out of filter strips and place it into production. It was noted that having the rules changed to allow making hay off the fallow land would be a positive step. One member said the strips have to be mowed, and then that dead vegetation just ends up washed into the streams. Making hay would be a benefit not only to the farmer but the watershed as well.
Terry Wissman reported that Grand Lake St. Marys was 13 inches above normal pool. He said the ice cover varies from open water to several inches. Wissman did note that the ice on the area above the silt traps did not remain as long as that in other areas-that is due to the deeper nature of the water in those parts of the creeks.
Donna Grube Reported that the Convention & Visitors Bureau just wrapped up the Indianapolis Sports, Vacation & Boat Show. They will be at the Cleveland show in March and that will be their final show of the season.
Grube, in her role as Secretary, also noted that the LDC had received a communication from the friends of the Ohio State Parks which invited members to the Spring Symposium planned for April 21, at Mohican Conference Center in Perrysville. She said if any members were interested, she would be glad to pass along the details.
Bob Grimm reported on the LIA's 60th Anniversary Celebration. Glenn Cobb of ODNR attended the group's last meeting and presented them with an award for their dedication in working to improve Grand Lake St. Marys. Grimm also noted that he thinks the LDC should participate in the Celina lake Festival boat parade. Grimm ended his report showing the group a packet of information that was put together for legislators. The packets detail the water quality problems of Grand Lake St. Marys and seek funding for solutions. They have been sent to the Governor, state & federal legislators and other officials.
