Lake Development Corporation Minutes
5/04/07
The June 4, 2007 meeting of the Lake Development Corporation was called to order at 4:06 pm by Vice President Frank C. Murray. In attendance were Rick Bachelor, Don Davis, Bob Grimm, Donna Grube, Owen Hall, Kent Hinton, Tom Knapke, Milt Miller, Frank C. Murray, Greg Schumm, Matt Schwieterman, Doug Temple, Max Gilpin, Craig Morton, Sharon LaRue and Nancy Allen of the Daily Standard.
The May, 2007 minutes were approved. Treasurer Milt Miller reported that the current bank balance stands at $10,231.40. Miler was presented with bills from the March Wildlife Summit and for the LDC's membership renewal to the Friends of Ohio State Parks. After a short discussion on that organization, Don Davis moved that the LDC renew that membership. That motion received a second from Bob Grimm, motion carried.
Craig Morton Presented the lake report:
- Dredge
- Both floating suction dredges have been pumping. The smaller dredge is progressing down the Grand Haven Channel and the larger dredge is working into the Behms Channel
- Long reach track hoe is working on cleaning out the DMRA at the park maint. area.
- Continuing with the tear down of the Liette DMRA.
- Next few channels are Duckfoot, Windy Point West, Schells, and St, Marys Boat Club.
- Anderson in-lake DMRA is in the public comment phase from the Army Corp
- Lake Safety
- Saturday evening had a near drowning involving a 7 year old girl. She was rescued by someone not in her group or family. She was able to return to her site by 11pm that night. Parents need to stay very close to children when swimming in the lake.
- Beach samples came back with good low numbers. Tested Big Chickasaw boaters beach also good. E. coli.
- The lake lights on the oil derrick rock pile have been fixed and the Windy Point lights. One still out at the maint. area DMRA.
- Recent fish kill on south side was checked by Wildlife, DO of 0.
- Park
- Waterline for the campground has been all replaced and covered up in time for Mem. Day weekend.. We are working on trying to keep the grass watered and alive through this dry spell.
- Six trees have been planted in the park in the past month. Two in the campground dedicated to Mike Bertke.
- One Park Officer from GLSM and two from Loramie attended a week long advanced Watercraft patrol training. This training is in compliance with a WC grant that we have received that will allow us to have more effective lake patrol and more hours of lake patrol.
Frank reviewed the needs for the upcoming Legislative Day on the Lake. LDC members are asked to be there at 8:45 to make sure everything is set up and ready to go. Greg Schumm reported that Bella's will be doing the catering, same menu as last year at the same cost per serving. Donna Grube reported that at this time 82 people have RSVP'd to her office. The first speakers will be taking about the Grand Lake/Wabash Watershed Plan. ODNR officials will be given an opportunity in the second part of the program to speak. In case of inclement weather the group will have use of the auditorium. No golf carts will be used this year to transport attendees from the parking lot. Greg Schumm asked for pontoon backup as the university's boat needs repair. He is hoping to have it running by then, but in case he would like to have someone help in this area. Don Davis volunteered his help in this matter.
Bob Grimm reported that the LIA is again sponsoring the Boat Parade on Friday evening, July 27, 2007, as part of the Celina Lake Festival. Grimm noted that they will have the Lost Weekend II leading the way with this year's grand marshal-ODNR Parks Division Chief Dan West. Grimm noted that they are planning a two hour cruise prior to the parade with LIA, LDC and other area officials. He said they are hoping this will be a good lobbying time with the chief and other officials.
Greg Schumm noted that the campus will be offering sailing classes this summer. Brad Barton will be the instructor. Greg also reported that the LIA and Wright State are working together on an experiment. It has to do with using barley straw to help clean lake water. Schumm & Bob Grimm explained that the group has placed bales of the straw in a channel. Professor Robert Hiskey of Wright State University will be testing the water to see if it has any effect on the water quality. Schumm noted that probably would not be a solution to the lake algae problem-but it might help in the channels.
With no other business to come before the group, Matt Schwieterman moved the meeting be adjourned, seconded by Craig Morton, motion carried at 4:35 pm. Due to the July 4th holiday, the next scheduled LDC Meeting will be July 9th, 4 pm, room 182 at Wright State University Lake Campus.
