Lake Improvement Association Minutes
2/03/07
The February 3 meeting was called to order by President Bill Ringo with the pledge of allegiance to the flag - secretary and treasurer's reports from the January meeting were approved as read. It was announced that the wife of member Stan Grimm is gravely ill and needs our prayers - our thoughts are with Stan and his family at this difficult time. Bill welcomes all new members and visitors.
Membership Committee rep Herb Richey conducted awarding of the two wildlife prints donated by Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever, one of which goes to a new member and the other to the L.I.A. member bringing in the most new members. There was a tie between Dave Meyer and Jeff Vossler - Jeff won the print with a flip of a coin; the new member drawn was Kurt Stueve of Centerville, Ohio.
Jeff Vossler, Political Action Committee, along with Greg Schumm of Wright State University, is assembling a portfolio of our activities, goals, ideas, etc. to be sent to all newly-elected state legislators, ODNR officials and other dignitaries so that they will understand who we are when their action is solicited in the future. NEXT L.R.C. MEETING - MONDAY, FEB. 19, 7:30 p.m., Celina Moose. Officers of the newly-formed Western Ohio Land Conservancy will be guest speakers - come out for the meeting and learn what this group is about!!
FYI - In 1946 there were 5,047 resident fishing licenses issued (non-resident, 3700) -- in 2003, there were 2,100 resident licenses (498 non-resident) - fishing has certainly changed in recent years. Bob Grimm has volunteered to chair the 60th ANNIVERSARY JUBILEE of the Lake Improvement Association, of which his grandfather was a founding member March 6, 1947 with 88 members. We plan a yearlong celebration of the L.I.A., all it has accomplished and hopes to achieve in the future. He asked for $2000 to get this celebration off the ground - motion was made and approved to do this. Your input and help is needed to help Bob make it a memorable year - call him at 419-394-4938 to volunteer.
Dave Meyer reports sediment trap monitoring is progressing, with test kits handed out to volunteers after this meeting. Grant application for the Kids Fishing Derby Wednesday, May 16, has been submitted. After the May 5 L.I.A. meeting, Dave will need help preparing 200 poles for these special kids. Try to be there!
Bob and Deb Hoersting, new chairs of the Barstool Open, announced the date - August 11. Mercer Beverage has again generously agreed to donate all printed material for this event - hats off to them!! Please consider participating in this year's Open - it is our only revenue-generating activity of the year other than membership dues.
Tom Rampe, Technical Advisor, assisted Theresa May in preparing a grant application for using geotextile tubes in treating manure. He shared information on lawn fertilizer products containing phosphorus - one of the excess nutrients in Grand Lake. Suggestion: find fertilizer that contains a "0" as the middle number on the bag. Locally it can be found at Helena Agri Center or Landmark. Another grant being applied for would enable 60 landowners to have soil samples tested at a cost of $10 each, with the homeowner paying half and the Watershed Alliance, the other half. It was moved and seconded the L.I.A. pay $300 to finance the landowners' portion of this testing if the grant is approved- motion passed.
Park Manager Craig Morton puts the lake at 11" above pool. Riley bay inlet sediment trap is finished. The long-reach track hoe and one dozer have moved to Lake Loramie to help them with dredge material relocation area projects. Still waiting for permit and right-of-entry for the DMRA to be built on Behm Road. Machine maintenance continues on two suction dredges and other equipment. Approval has been received for dredging at Duckfoot's Landing, Behm's, and park campground at the west end. Still waiting for approval for Windy Point west, and Southmoor Shores. Spring will see work begun at Grand Haven channel area. Annual report for dredge program is complete - 168,369 cubic yards of muck, much more than the usual 100,000 cubic yards.
