Lake Improvement Association Minutes
4/07/07
Welcome All New Members
Vice President Sharon Galbreath conducted the meeting in Bill Ringo's absence. After the pledge of allegiance to the flag, secretary and treasurer reports were approved from the March meeting. Treasurer Bob Froning announced that a total of $440 has been received in memory of Mike "Chicken" Bertke who recently passed away and whose family designated the L.I.A. to receive memorial donations - our thanks to the Bertke family. "Chicken" was a loyal member of the L.I.A. and helped mark stumps in the lake to be pulled by the ODNR. Bob proposed that this money be used to plant two trees near the lake in tribute to "Chicken's" memory. Motion was seconded and passed.
Tom Rampe, Technical Advisor, attended a recent Board of Health meeting where he learned that many residents tried to beat the deadline to have their septic systems approved under the old rules; due to the large volume of applicants overwhelming the limited number of personnel available to check the systems, about 40 were unable to renew their permits in time. Theresa May, Watershed Coordinator, reports that the next Grand Lake/Wabash Watershed Alliance joint board meeting is scheduled for April 26 at 4:00 p.m. at the Mercer County Soil & Water Conservation Office in Celina.
Jeff Vossler, Political Action, announced that the next L.R.C. meeting will be April 16 at 7:30 p.m., Celina Moose - guest will be T.J. Place speaking on tileage and drainage as they relate to the watershed. Legislative Day in conjunction with the Lake Development Corporation will be Friday June 15. State dignitaries have been invited and hopefully will attend to be informed of the lake's problems.
Kids Fishing Derby is coming up MAY 16 - fire up your ovens to bake lots of cookies for this great day. Come out to the East Bank shelter house around 9:30 for coffee and doughnuts and enjoy a rewarding day with special kids who eagerly anticipate this day - we need you. After next month's L.I.A. meeting (May), volunteer help is needed to repair/prepare some 200 fishing pole
APRIL 28 - LAKE CLEAN-UP DAY - 9:00 A.M. - Along with the ODNR and local scout troops, all are invited to clean up debris around the lake at Windy Point, West Bank boat ramp, East bank shelter.
Craig Morton puts lake level at 10" above normal pool. New capital budget process will begin soon - plans are to request funds for a new dredge as well as new campground buildings. Shoreline capital work will begin when the Army Corps of Engineers releases the permits. Many expensive repairs were required on dredge equipment over the winter. Sediment trap monitoring continues. An alligator appeared recently on the West bank boat ramp - it was 47" long, dead, with a fish hook in its mouth and wrapped in fishing line - no one knows how it got there. Park staff is implementing a Natural Resource Management Plan within the park, along with their naturalist and other interested volunteers, to further study and inventory different types of environments around the lake, its history and future plans; the L.I.A. and the Lake Development Corporation are invited to express their concerns and priorities in the form of a letter letting their interests and concerns become a part of this study.
Next L.I.A. meeting - May 7, 2007 - Celina Moose - 10:00 a.m.
