President Ringo cited many successful grant requests we have supported locally in the past, as well as other lobbying at the state level for improvement to Grand Lake and its watershed. Many of these can be attributed to our Lake Restoration Committee, the educational arm of the L.I.A. meeting the third Monday of each month. Next L.R.C. meeting will be July 16, 7:30 p.m. at the Celina Moose Theresa Dirksen, Soil & Water Technician, will present our Watershed Management Plan. Jeff Vossler reported on the Barley Straw Research Project underway at Behms Landing in an effort to curb the growth of the blue-green algae in Grand Lake; several local businesses H. A. Dorsten & Buschor Electric, as well as St. Marys Chamber of Commerce, donated funds and/or materials in support of cleaning up the lake. It takes about a month for the straw to decompose and create the oxide that will help retard the algae. Samples will be taken to Dr. Hiskey at Wright State for analysis.
Tom Rampe, Technical Advisor, attended the NRCS state technical committee meeting in June - the $10,000 grant for use of geotechnical tubes for dewatering manure was approved. At a coalition of Ohio land trusts conference in Delaware, Ohio, he learned of interesting ways of preserving environmentally-sensitive lands and get tax deductions for doing so. Tom will answer any questions on this at 419-268-2310.
Park Manager Craig Morton puts the lake level 2-3 below pool. He thanked the L.I.A. for past support enabling the park to maintain sufficient number of buoys, concrete pads for picnic tables, doors on the shelterhouses, and other projects to enhance state property for visitors. Stump pulling will continue this fall; if you encounter any, try to mark it and call the park office at 419-394-3611 with the location.
Theresa Howick, local farmer and L.I.A. supporter, outlined a program of water quality testing and encouraged volunteers to join her in testing local streams and tributaries for contaminants. On August 2, farmers will be invited to learn of a special $100,000 CREP program that may become available for cover crops, filter strips or other programs to join in the process of returning the lake to tolerable condition. An interesting prospect!!
