Jeff Vossler reports that Indian Lake has reduced annual sediment loads from 87,000 tons to 13,000 just by using no-till and winter crop cover. Grand Lake currently has more than 200,000 tons of sediment entering the lake annually. We need to promote this practice to our agricultural neighbors in an effort to get them to convert to these practices. Water quality benefits from winter cover crops include - reduction of nutrient and pesticide runoff by 50% or more; -decrease in soil erosion by 90%; - reduction in sediment loading by 75%; - reduction of pathogen loading by 60%; - reduction of flooding potential by increasing infiltration.
