President Obama recently signed a bill sponsored by Senator Rob Portman to help fight toxic algae. 

From the Columbus Dispatch:

"The bill signed by Obama would prioritize freshwater bodies, including the Great Lakes, for the first time and task federal agencies with monitoring and mitigating algae blooms there.

It will also require interagency reports aimed at studying the problems in U.S. waters, and pays for research into the problem."
